Papers of John S. Eyster, 1861-1907.

Papers consist primarily of muster rolls, accounts, leave requests, and commissions pertaining to Eyster's service as Captain of Company K, "McClure's Rifles" in the 12th regiment Pennsylvania Reserve Corps. Most were issued by Colonel John H. Taggart. Of interest are orders from General George A. McCall concerning camp sanitation and suspicious lights or signals, and the ordering sutlers from camp in order to curb sickness among the troops; an account for [African-American?] servant William H. Mong; and an 1861 photograph (albumin print) from a Lancaster, Pa., studio of a young man in a militia uniform. Post-war materials include an invitation to a 4th of July parade in Philadelphia, an 1874 military discharge certificate for Christian S. Eyster, a 1907 bounty claim form, and a 1907 letter concerning a deed. Items apparently unrelated to the family include an 1860 love letter and poem; pension records of James McConnell of the 126th Pennsylvania; and an 1892 private bill for Colonel Henry O. Kent, 17th New Hampshire Infantry Volunteers.
